A Forgotten Gest

2024
The table’s all done
And the meat’s in the oven
The carrots and the peas are goin’ down
The gravy’s just made
And the drinks, there’re chillin’
An old friend of mine is coming round’
Eatin’ and a drinkin’ and a cookin’ and a cleanin’
The jukebox playin’ the sounds
Laughin’ aloud, sittin’ by the fire
That old friend of mine is back in town
Many years past and I’m sittin’ in me kitchen
Writing these memories from my head
And this old friend is lookin’ at me now
Talkin’ as if I were dead
So, you can take your money, take your honey
Go on get the hell out of here
Its funny how things come and go then forgotten
Its funny how life turns around
A Forgotten Gest
A Forgotten Gest is a short story about how certain people can sometimes forget the good things that were done for them.
I can remember an expression my mother used to say to me growing up. It was ‘son, the more you do for people, the less they think of you’. I never really paid attention to it and didn’t really understand it until I joined the workforce. I became a working man and after years of busting my bollocks off for this company and that company, this person and that person, I began to understand what my mother was talking about. This is also true of friendship from time to time, well in my experience anyway. I guess we are all great friends until someone loses an eye. I can remember many times in my life helping others. Years later those very same people are talking to me as if I didn’t exist. So, I kinda wanted to write a song about this. It was a very easy song to write. I can remember just sitting in my bedroom just thinking of various situations, saying to myself, ‘how can people do this?’
But I guess the older you get the more you realize that yes, there truly are plenty of pricks in this world and as the years pass you tend not to care so much about it anymore.
It’s just life, sometimes it’s good, sometimes it sucks.
It is truly funny how life does turn around.
